Tile floors fail from below. Get the substrate right and the floor outlives the house. Get it wrong and you will be looking at cracked grout lines within a year.

A lot of housing stock in this part of New Jersey was built on wood joists a long time ago. Those floors flex. Tile set straight onto a flexing subfloor cracks, usually along the joist line, usually about a year in. Where we find deflection we add an uncoupling membrane so the floor can move without taking the tile with it.
People assume a floor needs to be level. What it actually needs to be is flat. A gentle slope across a room is invisible. A quarter inch hump in the middle will lip every tile that crosses it, and with large format tile you will feel it with your foot. We flatten before we tile, with a self-leveler where the floor needs it.
Where tile meets wood, carpet or a different tile is where cheap jobs look cheap. We plan the height difference up front so the transition sits flush instead of becoming a trip edge with a metal strip screwed over it.
